App Redesign
Background:
Venmo has become synonymous with making easy electronic payment between friends, family, and for businesses. Personally, it has been an awesome tool in making my transactions more convenient. With the growth in Venmo’s usage for managing finances, it is important that the brand identity and digital interfaces are understandable and intuitive.

Research
User Interviews
I conducted user interviews to understand customer pain points in the app
“The social media part of Venmo is fun but I honestly care more about giving and receiving money than seeing what other people are doing with theirs.”
“Venmo makes paying so easy but I lose track of how much money is coming in and going out.”
“Maybe I’m just old but it took me so long to figure out how to check my balance and transactions.”
“I always have so much money in my Venmo balance that I just forget about.”
Insights
Navigating the app to find the essential functions is overly complicated
The existing interface makes it hard for users to manage their finances
The social aspect of Venmo is disproportionately emphasized compared to sending and receiving payments
Original Design Analysis
Research
QR code icon is too small and hard to find
The home page brings the user directly to the social feed which can cause confusion
Navigation to the app’s essential functions are relegated to the bottom menu making them hard to find
Options to create a business profile and settings icon can be consolidated into one button for less clutter
Venmo balance can only be found after clicking on the “Me” page resulting in an overly complicated user journey
Payment descriptions are absent on user’s own payments – missed opportunity for money management
How might we redesign the existing Venmo mobile app to emphasize its essential functions and help users better manage their money?
Problem Statement
Solution
Initial Concept
I created a low fidelity mockup in Figma to organize my ideas and visualize my concept.
Solution
Final Design
The payment page is much more accessible and pronounced in the Home Screen
Two separate pages for payment and description to emphasize the description requirement
Larger buttons and icons for increased accessibility and ease-of-use
Payments
Venmo balance indicator and the Transfer Balance button are moved to the home page, increasing efficiency for the user
Bigger buttons and icons for increased accessibility and ease-of-use
Venmo Balance
The profile button is more prominent and easier to access from the home page
Transactions include a description, making it easier for users to look back on and check their history
Green and red markers provide a visual indicator for users to better understand and manage their Venmo finances
Profile
Social
The social aspect of Venmo is still included but is less of an emphasis
Large icon still makes the social feed easy to access
